Sled Pull

Where you push the sled away at the sled push, you pull it towards you at the sled pull. A tug-of-war motion using your whole body, not just your arms.

Technique matters more here than raw strength. Find the right angle and sequence and you'll save real energy for the rest of the race.

How to do it

  1. Stand facing the sled and grip the rope firmly
  2. Lean your weight back
  3. Pull hand over hand while walking backward with your legs
  4. Keep the rope taut, no slack
  5. Repeat until the sled reaches you

Your legs do the work of walking backward, your arms mainly hold on. Pull with arms alone and you lose strength fast.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling with arms only. Use your legs to walk backward.
  • Letting the rope go slack. Costs extra pulls and time.
  • Leaning back too far. Loses balance and control.
  • Wrong foot position. Slipping costs power and rhythm.
  • Pulling too fast. Breathing gets thrown off, pace drops further afterward.
