Deadlift
The deadlift is the foundation of almost every pulling movement. Lifting a barbell from the floor until you stand tall. Simple to explain, technical to execute.
In a WOD it often comes back under fatigue. That is exactly when your position decides whether you keep going or stop.
How to do it
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart, the bar over the middle of your foot
- Grip the bar just outside your knees, arms straight
- Set your back straight, chest slightly forward, shoulders over the bar
- Push the floor away with your legs and keep the bar close to your body
- Extend your hips and knees together until you stand tall
The power comes from your legs and hips, not your back. Pull with your back and you pay for it later.
Common mistakes
- Rounded back. Increases the load on your lower back.
- Bar too far from your body. Every centimetre of distance makes it heavier.
- Hips rising too early. Your legs stop working and your back takes over.
- Overextending at the top. Leaning back adds nothing and loads your back.
- Bouncing the bar. Without control you lose technique with every rep.
